Esiama — pronounced Ez-ieh-mah — is a town of the Nzema East Municipal District (Ellembelle), facing the Gulf of Guinea, the southern extension of the Atlantic along the West African coast.
The history of Esiama is traditionally categorized into three key areas: migration, kingship and civil education. Its annals can be traced as far back as c. 1256 in oral traditions and records — one of only three Nzema civilizations able to claim seven centuries of roots. Esiama is that town: the main pioneer for modern education, cultural preservation and civil development in the whole of Nzemaland.
Origins — the Palace through the tides
The foundations for the first palace were built by the people of Esiama with the interest and contribution of the Dutch. Over time that first palace was lost to the tides of the sea. The Royal Palace that stands today was erected by the British in partnership with the community.

The Royal Palace: A Century of Heritage. Esiama recently marked a significant milestone with the announcement of the 100th anniversary celebration of the Royal Palace, held in Accra. The Secretary of the Royal Palace, Rev. Alfred Godbless Armoo, presented the commemoration — a century since the Palace’s founding in 1927, now counted toward 2027.
Commercial Hub of Ellembelle. The GH¢9 million commercial hub — funded by Ghana National Gas Company Ltd — centralizes modern trade, improves traffic and transport along the Elubo–Agona Nkwanta highway and makes resources available to all of Nzema. Well on its way to completion and scheduled before early December, the complex promises 76 stores, a transport parking area, security posts, sheds and other facilities. Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah has championed its promise to the district.
Central hub for transport. Every other major town in Ellembelle and beyond depends on Esiama’s network to travel. Esiama remains one of the most reliable checkpoints for travel to and fro in Nzemaland, with safe, well-spaced and maintained road systems.
Kundum. Every year Kundum Abisa is celebrated in Nzema — Esiama’s week is always the 1st week of October. Esiama’s celebration is the most anticipated and popular each year, with notable visits from the Asantehene, Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah (Minister of Lands and Natural Resources), and prominent personalities from Côte d’Ivoire, the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom. Exact dates for the celebration window are to be confirmed by the Palace.

• Rev. John Okulade, the first African bishop in Ghana, consecrated the palace.
